Interesting facts about ice in Japan
Each year in winter drift ice forms in the Amur River which flows along the border of Russia and China. The ice then travels 600 miles south through the Sea of Okhotsk by wind and ocean currents until it reaches the northern coastline of the Hokkaido Prefecture.
The drift ice puts the whole northern coastal region in a deep freeze from mid January to mid March. A lot of people, including tourists visit the region during this period to witness this incredible natural phenomenon. Find out more here.
